About Our School

Sekolah Methodist Wesley or Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur was originally known as Kolej Methodist Sentul Campus. The Presidential Task Force set up by the Methodist Church in Malaysia in 1976, recommended that the character of Methodist Private Schools, which had provided a second chance for dropouts from the government system, be transformed, in osrder to provide quality education.

Implementing such a proposal entailed identifying persons of calibre and dedication. To accept the challenge, Mrs F. R. Bhupalan, a well known educationist, responded to the call, and, with the assistance of Mr J.B. Vanniasingham as Director of Studies and Mr David Gunaratnam as Deputy Principal, Methodist College Brickfields was established.

The College made its debut in January 1983 offering places for students from Form 1 to Form 5. Simultaneously GCE A-Level classes in Science and Arts were introduced. There were also the students of Methodist High School to be phased out. It was an arduous task coordinating three different types of curriculum under one roof with a mixed bag of teachers and limited resources. Its evolution into what it is today was a slow process.

Despite a modest start with some 80 students, the College gradually earned a name for itself as a disciplined, quality secondary school. The social stigma that the Methodist School at Brickfields was for drop-outs was erased. With excellent results in all the Public Examinations, the College expanded into a 4-stream secondary school in 1993. A new campus was established in 1992 for Lower Secondary classes with Mrs Monica Vinayagamoorthy as Supervisor, and later Deputy Principal.

In 1993, Mrs Bhupalan retired and Mr A R Peter, ex-Principal of ACS Secondary, Klang (1979-1993) was prevailed upon to accept Principalship of the College and lead it to greater heights.

In 1994, the entire Lower Secondary School (Form 1 - 3) moved to the Sentul Campus, while the Upper Secondary (Form 4 - 5) remained in Brickfields. Soon plans were afoot for the building of a new secondary school at the Sentul Campus.

Eventually, in 1999, with the completion of a new shaped four storey block comprising 4 Science Labs, 2 Computer Labs, a Library, Hall, Cafeteria and spacious classrooms, the entire Secondary School became fully operational in the Sentul Campus. The new school began to grow and by 2003 it reached its maximum capacity of a six stream school with an enrolment of almost 900 students.

Meanwhile, in 2001, the school in accordance with the directive from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, changed its name from Methodist College Sentul Campus to SEKOLAH METHODIST WESLEY, KUALA LUMPUR (Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur). Mr Peter continued to serve as CEO of Methodist College and Principal of Wesley Methodist School until July 2003. In August 2003 Dr Chiam Heng Keng a retired professor from University Malaya took over as CEO of Methodist College while Mr Peter remained as Principal of Wesley Methodist School.

At the end of February 2001, Mrs Monica Vinayagamoorthy, the Deputy Principal, who had been with the Sentul Campus since its establishment in 1992, went on Voluntary Retirement. Mrs Vimala Mathews, ex-Principal of Convent Bukit Nanas Kuala Lumpur, was invited to take her place as Vice Principal in charge of Academic Affairs, while Mr Shih Toong Siong who had been with the school since 1997, was elevated to the post of Vice Principal in charge of Student Affairs. He held this post until his retirement at the end of 2004, and in January 2005 Mrs Vimala Mathews was appointed Deputy Principal.

As early as 2003, noticing the potential and enthusiasm in the young students, the Principal was inspired to embark on yet another building project to provide the children with better facilities. After much discussion and planning, the Management Board, with the blessings of Bishop Datuk Dr Peter Chio and the Council of Education, decided to go ahead with this project to put up a five storey block with the best possiblefacilities thatare expected in a top-notch private secondary school to provide a conducive and spacious environment for the students to maximize their potential. This building project (a five storey block) comprising classrooms, Science Labs, Computer Labs, Staff Rooms, a Conference Room, Administration Office, Sick Bay and a large Multipurpose Hall with Elevator Service was started in 2005. Today we are grateful to God for the successful completion of this building. Our vision has become a reality.

The school has grown from strength to strength with the current enrolment of 934 students and 75 teachers. The school is one of the most sought after Private Secondary Day Schools in the country, with hundreds of aspiring students being turned away each year because of lack of places.

Wesley Methodist School takes pride in providing a well balanced all-round education with strong emphasis on character development based on good moral values, culminating in academic excellence with a high standard of discipline. As in the past years, the school has produced outstanding results in the recently announced SPM and PMR Examinations of 2006.

The school has an excellent Extra Curricular Programme which is very effectively carried out. Our students participate in the MSSWP Competitions and do well.Numerous Study Tours and Excursions are organized to give the students opportunities to learn more about our own country and some neighbouring countries such as Japan, Australia and China.

In April 2006 Ms Goh Kai Lian who had retired as Principal of St. Marys Secondary School Kuala Lumpur joined the school as Vice Principal.

In December 2006 Mr A R Peter who had been with the school since 1993 retired from Principalship of the school and was made Adviser to the Board of Management.

In January 2007 Mrs Vimala Mathews was appointed Principal with Ms Goh Kai Lian as Deputy Principal. For Wesley Methodist School, with these two dynamic, experienced and knowledgeable educationists at the helm, the best is yet to be.

Wesley Methodist School will continue to strive to be
